National Trails (England)

Summary

Linear dataset showing the extent of National Trails. For more information visit the National Trails website. National Trails are long distance walking, cycling and horse riding routes through the best landscapes in England and Wales. There are 15 National Trails. Walkers can enjoy them all, cyclists and horse riders can enjoy the Pennine Bridleway and the South Downs Way, as well as sections of the other Trails. In total, England and Wales have around 2,500 miles (4,000 Km) of National Trail. The England Coast Path will be the newest (and longest) National Trail when it is complete in 2020.

National Trails are one of Natural England’s (NE’s) flagship assets, delivering on our outcomes through recreational and volunteering opportunities that inspire people to value and conserve the natural environment. They provide low cost, low carbon leisure experiences either for part of a day, short break or longer off-road journeys through some of our finest landscapes.

Lineage
In early 2013, Natural England undertook a project to update the digital dataset with all approved VR changes from 2000 to the present and to improve the data capture scale from 1:25,000 to 1:10,000. The National Trails dataset has been captured using a standard methodology that makes use of a number of existing data sources and several verification steps. Existing Data Sources: The original Natural England National Trail dataset: National Trail Officers (NTOs) have supplied NE with their own versions of their trail datasets, in a variety of formats, styles and capture scales dependent on the resources and capabilities of the NTO: Ordnance Survey (OS) Trail Dataset. In 2013 the OS provided Natural England with digital linework for each trail taken from their base mapping and PRoW products. The OS data followed existing OS line features consistently so it was decided to use this as the starting point for the new dataset to minimise recapture of the majority of the route Other datasets used: Ordnance Survey ©Ordnance Survey MasterMap; Ordnance Survey (OS) Trail Dataset
