This data is the source dataset for the Forestry Commissions Headline Performance Indicator: ‘Percentage of woodland that is sustainably managed in England (including the nation's forests managed by Forestry England)’. This Indicator forms part of the Forestry Commission Key Performance Indicators published biannually and annually, depending on each individual indicator publication schedule. This website gives more information about the Forestry Commission Performance Indicators: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/forestry-commission-corporate-plan-performance-indicators. For the purposes of the performance indicator, 'sustainably managed’ woodland is currently defined using a range of administrative data sources. Please see the lineage section for further information. It is recognised that there are other woodlands that could be considered to be 'sustainably managed’.

Attributes: CLASS = managed status. Managed status descriptions: 'Managed private' = any woodland where management is indicated by an administrative data source – see lineage for more information. 'Managed public' = any of our nation’s forests managed by Forestry England. Lineage: Measurement Methodology - Headline indicator A. This actual formal headline KPI: Percentage of woodland that is sustainably managed in England (including the nation's forests managed by Forestry England). This is expressed as a percentage of all National Forest Inventory (NFI) woodland in the latest available NFI woodland map at the time of computations for the respective reports. B. Sub-indicator: Percentage of woodland that is sustainably managed in England other than in the nation's forests managed by Forestry England. As for the main formal indicator above, minus contribution 1. in the nation's forests managed by Forestry England. This is expressed as a percentage of all National Forest Inventory (NFI) woodland in the nation's forests managed by Forestry England, in the latest available NFI woodland map at the time of computations for the respective reports. Numerator: Woodland is counted as in sustainable management where the woodland is included in any one or more of the following categories: 1. In the nation's forests managed by Forestry England (aka ‘Public Forest Estate’), 2. England Woodland Grant Scheme (EWGS) Woodland Creation Grant, where the contract start date is within 15 years before the report date, 3. EWGS Woodland Management Grant, where the contract start date is within 15 years before the report date, 4. EWGS Woodland Planning Grant, where the contract start date is within 15 years before the report date, 5. EWGS Woodland Improvement Grant, where the contract start date is within 15 years before the report date, 6. Woodland Grant Scheme 3, where the contract start date is within 15 years before the report date, 7. Farm Woodland Premium Scheme, where the contract start date is within 15 years before the report date, 8. Is covered by a Felling Licence Application, where the contract start date is within 15 years before the report date, 9. Is covered by Management Plans, where either funded or unfunded, and approved within the 10 years before the report date, 10. Is woodland on a Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) training area, 11. Countryside Stewardship woodland creation, where claims were paid before the report date, 12.
