Freshwater Fish Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) analysis 2022
Summary
Fish can be used to indicate the ecological status of a river. These data were produced from the same samples collected as part of the routine sampling and analysis undertaken by the Environment Agency as part of its “WFD Classification Status” in 2022 and these data may be considered in combination.

This dataset is a subset of "WFD Classification Status Cycle 2" and contains classification data for fish in rivers. Fish can be used to indicate the ecological status of a river. Metrics on river fish composition, abundance and prevalence are run through the FCS2 classification tool. The actual (observed) values for these metrics are compared with a predicted value (reflecting a river in pristine condition). The comparison of the observed to expected values is known as an Ecological Quality Ratio (EQR). EQRs are used to produce a fish classification (High, Good, Moderate, Poor, Bad) of the water body for Water Framework Directive (WFD) purposes. | Open link | |
The Water Quality Archive provides data on water quality measurements. Samples are taken at sampling points around England and can be from coastal or estuarine waters, rivers, lakes, ponds, canals or groundwaters. They are taken for a number of purposes including compliance assessment against discharge permits, investigation of pollution incidents or environmental monitoring. The archive provides data on measurements and samples dating from 2000. | Open link |
